- CEOs weigh in on IDC research
It's always good to see the mainstream market intelligence houses, like IDC, produce research related to the open source marketplace. In this case the numbers portray a promising future for the growth of open source in general.
- Moveable Type 4 beta, open source
It will be interesting to see how/if this plays itself out for Six Apart...after all, we've already seen what it has done for WordPress. Establishing a balanced governance model within an open source community isn't a piece of cake.
- Open Solutions Alliance sizes up IP risk
I know they're not exactly putting a stack together, but OSA continues to add members which will allow them to make good on the solutions part of its name. I haven't had the opportunity to talk with anyone from OSA as yet, but I've got them pegged as a dark horse, of sorts, within the open source arena.
- Microsoft in the role of embracer?
Now that the question of whether open source has staying power has been answered. The questions becomes how (not if) will the heavyweight proprietary vendors go about embracing the paradigm shift. I've got Adobe and Sun marked as frontier leaders, with others like Microsoft and SAP yet to show their strategic hand. Still, it's clear they won't be able to squish/buy/sue their way out of having to adjust to the presence of open source.
- Open source hiring?
As open source companies continue to grow and expand will they develop separate techniques for hiring or will the processes simply fall under the general hiring umbrella?
- A more Linux-like Solaris?
I'm waiting for Sun to better sort out how to aptly fit OpenSolaris into its open source portfolio as well as establish better messaging surrounding differentiation and value proposition, similar to what GlassFish is doing in what most assumed to be the crowded [open source] JEE app server segment.
- Hyperic nets $6 million in Series B funding
Hyperic takes in another round of funding in anticipation of expansion of its product portfolio. My only question is how long before vendors in the Big 4 wait until they start buying open source companies like Hyperic? Or are they underestimating the level of gathering competitive backlash that is set to materialize?
