All things connected to internet - RFID + Semantic Web
CueCat flopped in early years of 21st century because web users did not like the idea of scanning barcodes for more online information. Either the information that was made available through this scanner was not of interest, or WWW and e-commerce were not very popular, or the web users were afraid of losing control over the private information that may be collected by the web sites visited or by the CueCat provider Digital Convergence. The web site of Digital Convergence had a message in 2004:
"The dream was to connect items in the physical world to the Internet, automatically. In January that dream hit a bump in the road and the servers were taken offline. They will scan again... If you have a Cue Cat, save it. The patents and technology created by Digital Convergence will again be available for business and consumer use" - Wikipedia.
Since then the technology has evolved, consumer has become intelligent, systems are more secure, internet reachability has increased and information is the fuel for internet. While semantic web talks about connecting all 'things' on the World Wide Web, RFID connects physical things to the internet. We discussed about storing 'thing' URI in the RFID tag. The technology savvy consumer today not only wants to find the best value for money in terms of product cost and features but also wants to know about how these features work. We have been discussing about open market concept that will provide the best value for money; Highly Dynamic Systems with RFID readers will bring information and convenience.
CueCat was a device with proprietary technology and therefore information was controlled by the inventors Digital Convergence. The popularity of HDS will bring around many such devices with normative technology that will have the facility to not only read the RFID tag but provide instant connection to the product information URI. RFID readers in mobile phones are a mobile version of CueCat. This is another innovative method of information convergence, not just q4 but q4 + 'things'; these things may be just anything on this earth.
