IT Companies Agree on Reduction of Carbon Emission

Google together with other IT companies are joining forces to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2010 through the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. By cutting energy usage that computers use, IT major players such as Google, Intel, Dell, and other computer companies and other environmental organizations hopes to cut down 54 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

Although this campaign would mean higher production and retail costs of computer would rise, this will be offset by the savings generated from the energy efficient computers that will be produced. Intel's Digital Enterprise Group general manager, Pat Gelsinger says:

"By 2010, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative will cut greenhouse gas emissions in an amount equal to removing more than 11 million cars from the road or shutting down 20 500-megawatt coal-fired power plants -- a significant step in reducing the emissions affecting our planet,"

As part of the initiative, users or consumers are also encouraged to pledge support by signing at the climatesavers signifying their pledge to patronize initiative-certified systems.

Hats off to these IT companies for initiating such great endeavor to ensure environmental safety. Hopefully, this initiative would be sustainable enough to last through the years and would the start of an environmentally conscious IT business industry.
