Yahoo Makes IM Available on the Web

Yahoo takes a step ahead of its competitors with the launch of its widely used Instant Messaging applications, via a web browser. The previously "download-install " on your hard disk application can now be used without the need to download and install the applications on users' hard drive.

The new web-based version of the Yahoo IM hopes to bring the personal messaging applications to more users, more specifically to those who don't have their own PCs at home and are just using computers on internet cafes, schools or public libraries to communicate with their contacts internationally.

The web based Yahoo IM wil be initially available for users in Brazil, India, Malaysia, Philippines, the United States and Vietnam, before it becomes available to other users worldwide.

Yahoo IM is currently ranks 2nd to AOL's IM services while Microsoft's Live Messenger is currently on the 3rd spot. Google's very own IM service known as GTalk is currently residing inside Gmail, although users can opt to add the Gtalk screen on their personalized homepage (recently renamed iGoogle).

This move would certainly increase the usage of Yahoo's IM service. Imagine the number of corporate employees who can easily sneak up a web browser on their PC and pretend that they are doing their official work instead of chatting with their online friends. And yes no more worries of getting tracked down or blocked off by system administrators. Yahoo!
