MySpace + Photobucket = Done Deal?
Is MySpace really buying Photobucket? A lot of media speculation has arisen the past several days. Reuters reports today that a preliminary deal worth $250 million has been reached by the two companies. New York Times says that the deal was not over yet. Negotiations are still ongoing between the two companies.
Not even MySpace very own news portal carries any official announcement from the company of whether the deal is done or not. So, what is the real deal? Is Myspace really acquiring one of the web’s most established online photo storage facilities which have been widely used by My Space’s very own members in their respective places on MySpaces.
We could only speculate further as of now, until MySpace or Photobucket released an official press statement clarifying the deal.
But what is in it for MySpace? Why so very keen on purchasing Photobucket? Is MySpace afraid that Google might suddenly decide to buy Photobucket and have the exclusive right on the photo storage service? Imagine, the millions of Photobucket storage who access their respective storage site plus visits by their friends and relatives.
There is a potential for success for an advertising program with such number of users. Imagine if Google acquires Photobucket and implements adsense ads on individual Photobucket user’s account. That certainly has the potential to earn a lot from online advertising.
Aside from MySpace, Photobucket has also been used by non-MySpace users. More specifically in community forums where members share their photos to other forum members. Photobucket has been widely used to host these photos.
So, what’s in it for MySpace if it acquires Photobucket? A lot. In the meantime, let’s all watch out for developments on this deal in the hours (or perhaps days) to come.
